Land Acknowledgement
A land acknowledgement recognizes the traditional territory of the Indigenous people(s) who called the land home before the arrival of settlers. By making a land acknowledgement we are taking part in an act of reconciliation and honouring the Indigenous presence that dates back over 10,000 years.
Armstrong recognizes that our manufacturing facility and management offices in Toronto are on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and MeĢtis peoples. We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.
The name Toronto derives from the Mohawk word, Tkaronto, which translates to ‘where there are trees in the water’. It is a reference to the weirs constructed in Lake Ontario and its waterways by the Iroquois (or Haudenosaunee) and other Indigenous peoples, to catch fish.
Armstrong recognizes that our manufacturing facility and management offices in North Tonawanda, NY are on the traditional territory of the Seneca Nation, a member of the Haudenosaunee/Six Nations Confederacy. This territory is covered by The Dish with One Spoon Treaty of Peace and Friendship, a pledge to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.
Tonawanda, which means ‘swift waters’, was the name given to the area by the Erie, the area's original inhabitants, and likely refers to the currents of the Niagara River.
